Recommended Puppy Supplies
Things to have before the puppy comes home
1. One crate at least 24"W x 36"L x 27"H my crate is 26" W x 41"L x 27"H and it’s a little large. I recommend you buy the folding crate, they are much easier to manage when traveling to obedience, lure coursing and agility trials and also conformation shows. I don’t recommend purchasing a nice crate pad at first; the puppy will chew it up. Use an old towel or blanket at first.
2. A stainless steel water bowl and food bowl. I don’t recommend plastic because some dogs are allergic to plastic.
3. A 6-foot leather leash.
4. A dremel to trim the dog’s toenails.
Keeping the nails short is very important for healthy feet. You
should make a weekly routine to
maintain short nails
5. Quick Stop to stop the bleeding of a toenail that you may have cut a little to short.
6. A dog tooth brush and dog toothpaste,
again a weekly routine is best. Baking Soda can be
used instead of dog toothpaste.
Human toothpaste tends to upset dogs’ stomachs.
7. A pooper scooper.
8. A Zoom Groom for keeping the loose hair from falling onto the furniture or floor.
9. An I.D. tag for the dog’s collar with your name, address and phone number.
10. Puppy Milkbones.
11. Premium ADULT Dog Food.
12. Frozen Baby Carrots are great for teething puppies, I highly recommend this!
13. Avoid the cute vinyl toys because they don’t hold up to puppy teeth, these are a waste of money with Ridgebacks.
14. A Buster Cube. This is a dog toy that I highly recommend!
15. A large Kong. Another dog toy that will help prevent chewing on your furniture
16. A Nylabone.
17. A nice sized lamb’s wool stuffed toy for the puppy to sleep with.
18. A nice bone to chew on would be nice.
19. A rope toy.
20. A word of caution, do NOT give the puppy raw hide chew toys!! Pieces can come off and sometimes cause an obstruction in the intestines requiring surgery or sometimes death.
20. PUPPY PROOF your house just
like you would baby proof. Puppies will taste and chew anything,
harmful plants, electrical cords
and outlets, etc.
21. Find a good vet, preferably
one that has seen a Ridgeback before. If they haven’t seen a Ridgeback
before make sure they are willing
to learn about the breed.
22. Nature’s Miracle to clean up any "accidents" that may happen while housetraining.
23. Bitter Apple to help prevent chewing on furniture and other things.
24. A baby gate will help confine the dog to one or two rooms.
25. Vet Wrap is nice to have on hand for first aid.
26. Bag Balm helps sooth scrapes that may happen from time to time.
27. Neosporin for cuts and scrapes.
28. Hydrogen Peroxide, to clean scrapes and you can dilute this to make an inexpensive ear wash. Or you can get ear wash at the pet store.
